U.S. Diplomat Sees Progress in Somalia

USINFO

TV Dejen: The one man dictatorship in Eritrea
Washington -- Somalia's struggle to form a unified government after 15 years of clan warfare is achieving success, thanks to partners in the Horn of Africa region like Ethiopia and with help from the United Nations, the African Union (AU) and the United States, Ambassador Vicki Huddleston told the Council on Foreign Relations February 22 in Washington. ..Before that victory, "many warned that if Ethiopia intervened on behalf of the transitional government it would fuel a wider war. They were all wrong," Huddleston told the CFR panel. Now "Ethiopia's and the Somali government's surprisingly easy victories have given Somalia -- and the West -- a second chance to get things right," said Huddleston, who returned in December 2006 from Addis Ababa. .. Politically, TFG President Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed also took "a great step" in the right direction in organizing a political conference of 3,000 clan leaders from around the country, the diplomat added. A country not contributing to stability in Somalia, according to Huddleston, is Eritrea, which, she said, "hoped to use the conflict in Somalia to destabilize its archenemy Ethiopia." But this tactic failed, the diplomat told the CFR audience.

Ethiopian PM embraces 'strong developmental state'

Yahoo! News

LONDON (AFP) - Market reforms in Africa at the urging of western institutions have not succeeded and a "strong developmental state" is the best way forward for Ethiopia, the country's prime minister said in an interview published in the Financial Times. According to Meles Zenawi, "neo-liberal" reforms pushed by the World Bank and other institutions in Africa have failed to "generate the kind of growth they sought." "I believe in a strong developmental state," Meles told the business daily in an interview conducted in Addis Ababa. "Developmental states do not intervene in the market in a wanton fashion. They intervene in the market to address pervasive market failures. It is a combination of market instruments and non-market instruments to optimise the outcome. That has been the model of, let's say, Korea and Taiwan," he said. ..The prime minister also defended China's willingness to lend money to African states without demanding improvements in governance or other indicators, saying: "I think it would be wrong for people in the West to assume that they can buy good governance in Africa." "Good governance can only come from inside; it cannot be imposed from outside. That was always an illusion. What the Chinese have done is explode that illusion." "It does not in any way endanger the reforms of good governance and democracy in Africa because only those that were home-grown ever had a chance of success."

A Baseless Report, Ethiopia Says of Amnesty Statement on Torture Fear

voa

Ethiopia says it is not torturing supporters of the opposition Coalition for Unity and Democracy (CUD) who are being held in prison. The Ethiopian government also repeated its allegations against bitter rival Eritrea of plotting to bomb Addis Ababa during the African Union summit last week. ..“This is simply a new fabrication by Amnesty International. They should check their report. The constitution of Ethiopia doesn’t allow torture to be inflicted on anybody. So basically, they are lying, and then we absolutely reject this outrageous report,” Simon said.

Comment: Amnesty International is not impartial or professional in its dealings with the Ethiopian government. In fact, an Amnesty International representative was one of the guests of honor in KIL meeting in London over a year ago. The other guest was none other than Anna Gomez herself. If some of you think you’ve seen Amnesty International’s latest report before, you sure have. The report is a rehashed version of the graphically false and sensational accusations against the government that were posted on the mendacious vocal opposition websites very recently. It is good to know that Amnesty International and the vocal opposition websites are in the business of recycling garbage.

Ethiopia PM: no confirmed Somalia al Qaeda dead-FT

Reuters

LONDON, Feb 5 (Reuters) - There has been no confirmation so far of any targeted al Qaeda suspects being killed in Somalia, Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi told the Financial Times in an interview published on Monday. Ethiopia is working closely with the United States to identify Islamist fighters killed in neighbouring Somalia in recent clashes, including U.S. air strikes, Meles said. "We do not have definite information on a number of the key al Qaeda targets. There are reports that one or two of them might have died but we have no confirmation," he told the FT. Bloodied papers belonging to Aden Hashi Farah Ayro, head of an Islamist militia, had been found, but reported sightings of him suggest he may have survived, Meles was quoted by the newspaper as saying. In addition, hardline Islamist leader Sheikh Hassan Dahir Aweys and Sheikh Hassan Turki are "alive and moving in and out of Kenya on the border," he added.

2 February 2007 – Renewing its support for the planned deployment of African Union (AU) peacekeepers in Somalia, the Security Council today called for the rapid dispatch of a United Nations technical mission to assess security needs in the war-wracked country. In a statement to the press following a closed-door meeting on the issue, Ambassador Peter Burian of Slovakia, which holds the rotating Council presidency this month, said the 15-member panel wanted the assessment mission team to report back with recommendations on how to bring durable peace to Somalia.

Ethiomedia says neither TPLF nor EPRDF exists. Furthermore, it asserts that the war in Somalia was Meles’s game. But as has been the case with all the fictitious stories concocted by the vocal and hateful opposition websites , such blatant lies could not withstand the glaring facts known to Ethiopians. Therefore, no sooner was it posted than it was removed from the webpage. Thankfully, a reader who saved the comment emailed it to us. It gives readers more clues on the character of the vocal Diaspora.

Ethiomedia believes there is no such thing as "TPLF" or "EPRDF" or "Woyane" but one maker-breaker Meles Zenawi, who uses the "law" as a legal cover to destroy prospective Ethiopian leaders, and prolong his longevity in power. Early on in his life, he set out to "liberate" Eritrea from Ethiopia, and when he found out that TPLF was too dull it was easily convertible into a Trojan horse, he seized power in Ethiopia. The rest is how to manufacture games - like the 2005 election or like the recent Somalia invasion - from the country we call our homeland but he has owned and would like to run as his own casino - until he loses, tears it down, and walks away if he can.

Britons seized while trying to flee Somalia

Telegraph

Four Britons are being held by the authorities in Kenya after being arrested apparently fleeing from war-torn Somalia, the Foreign Office has said. Police officials in Kenya said they were among several foreigners detained on the country's border with the east African state.

Comment: This is the same newspaper that made a liar out of Prime minister Meles for telling journalists that British citizens were among the dead and captured jihadists, which of course the vocal diaspora seized on.

US in warning on Somali militants

Financial Times

The US believes militant Islamists from the ousted coalition that held sway over parts of southern Somalia may be regrouping in Saudi Arabia, Eritrea and also Yemen, Jendayi Frazer, US assistant secretary of state for Africa, said yesterday. Speaking to the Financial Times in Addis Ababa, Ms Frazer said it was too early to tell who among the Islamist leadership had survived Ethiopia's invasion last month and subsequent US air strikes on alleged affiliates of al-Qaeda. ..But she was "very concerned" that extremist elements from among the defeated Islamists were "trying to reconstitute themselves either out of Saudi Arabia or Eritrea", and that international jihadist networks would see this as an opportunity. ..Ms Frazer described Eritrea, with whom the US has deteriorating relations, as a "source of regional instability". This had been "very clearly exposed" during recent events in Somalia. .."Eventually Eritrea will see the limits of its actions to destabilise the Horn," said Ms Frazer.

Ethiopia says foiled Eritrean-backed attack

Reuters

ADDIS ABABA (Reuters) - Ethiopia foiled an Eritrean-backed attack that had targeted the African Union summit attended by some 40 heads of states in Addis Ababa this week, an Ethiopian police statement said on Friday. .."An attempt to launch a series of terrorist attacks masterminded by senior officials of the Asmara regime and Eritrean explosive experts have successfully been aborted," a police statement said. "Ethiopia's anti-terrorist task force apprehended all perpetrators of the intended terrorist acts with their explosives and other accessories just ahead of the summit," it added without giving more information.

Three girls at a predawn religious procession in Axum.
In the predawn darkness of 5 a.m., nearly 1,000 people stand in a circle, their white robes reflecting the glow of the candle that each holds. In the center, priests in elaborate, many-hued robes and huge pillbox hats lead prayers over a golden replica of the Ark of the Covenant. Suddenly, the priests turn and start walking. The faithful follow, candles in hand, chanting eerily beautiful prayers in a language totally foreign to Western ears. The procession winds around town as the sun rises. It's just another morning in Axum, Ethiopia. This scene is repeated each day during the first week of every month. And in Ethiopia, there are 13 months. There also is a whole other way of keeping time -- what we call 7 a.m. is 1 o'clock here. And lunch is served at 7 (our 1 p.m.). It's also 1999.

Islamist Fighters Captured Fleeing Somalia

New York Times

MOGADISHU, Somalia, Jan. 17 — Somali Islamist fighters, possibly including some top leaders, were arrested as they tried to escape across the border into Kenya, Kenyan authorities said today. The arrests raised the possibility of a sticky asylum issue.“We have detained a number of people, but we are still trying to determine their identities,” said Alfred Mutua, spokesman for the Kenyan government. According to Somali officials, one of the Somalis captured by Kenyan soldiers may be Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, the second in command of the defeated Islamist Court Union forces. Gen. Ismail Qasim Naji of the Somali transitional government said that Sheikh Sharif’s briefcase was recently discovered at a jungle hideout in southwestern Somalia. “It had some important documents in it,” General Naji said at a press conference in Mogadishu, Somalia’s seaside capital. When a reporter asked what they were, the general replied, “Top secret.”

Aid organizations are vocal in their objection to the closure. By accusing EDF of rape, they are attempting to put pressure on the Kenyan government to open the border. It is all about dollar and cents for the NGOs.

Alistair Dutton, of Christian Aid’s humanitarian division, said: ‘The reports we are getting from Somalia, via our partner Northern Aid, cannot substantiated and we have to be cautious in our response to them. ‘But the allegations are very serious and it is vital that they are investigated urgently. Christian Aid believes that it is imperative that the Kenyan authorities immediately open the Somali border, in accordance with international humanitarian law, to allow those fleeing the violence access to Kenya and to humanitarian aid.’

Somali, Ethiopian troops search for gunmen

Globe and Mail

Mogadishu, Somalia — Somali troops and allied Ethiopian soldiers conducted house-to-house searches Monday in pursuit of gunmen who carried out an attack in the northeastern part of the capital. Four rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs) were fired at a convoy of Ethiopian and government troops Sunday night in Mogadishu's Hurwa district, destroying one military vehicle and triggering a 30-minute gun battle, residents said.

Europe’s policy vis-à-vis the Islamic Courts Union was one of accommodating and if possible installing them as a government at the expense of the legitimate and internationally recognized TFG. The Swedish member of the International Contact Group was reported to have threatened to legitimise UIC unless TFG delegation to Khartoum's 2nd (failed) round of negotiation last September surrender to Europe's formula to resolving the impasse between TFG and UIC. It was therefore no surprise to read the Swedish Foreign Minister condemned Ethiopia’s defensive action against the now defunct UIC.
European media led by British newspapers, TV stations, primarily BBC, and also “Analysts” were praising the UIC as good guys who restored peace in Somalia. Never mind that UIC is a Taliban regime led by extremists that declared Jihad on Ethiopia. Never mind some of these leaders have direct links to Al Qaeda. Never mind those UIC leaders made it abundantly clear they want to create Greater Somalia by incorporating parts of Ethiopia and Kenya. In their coverage of UIC, the overriding message of these media outlets was how good and fierce the militia were.
After UIC's obliteration in the hands of the Ethiopian Defense forces and Somali soldiers, the lamentation started in earnest. Every incident was magnified to portray the post UIC Somalia as anarchic. The EDF was seen as an enemy force. Yesterday one British Newspaper accused soldiers wearing Ethiopian uniform of rape. Today BBC stooped even lower by suggesting Africa will not manage to contribute soldiers to Somali Peacekeeping force because of AIDS. Now if you are wondering why BBC’s Africa coverage is saturated with bad news, what else would one expect when the editor, Martin Plaut, has such condescending views of Africans.
Europeans are stuck in their colonial mentality. It is a real shame.

'Winners' And 'Losers' In Somalia?

Global Information Network

Ethiopia is on a war footing, its troops having chased members of the Islamic Courts Union to Somalia's southern border. The U.S. has acknowledged a bombing run aimed at eliminating an alleged Al-Queda cell. Kenya has lent its support to the U.S. 'anti-terror' drive, as has Djibouti, a small country with a large U.S. base. Peace has not yet returned to the troubled zone yet there are already winners and losers according to Said Sheik Samatar, an African history professor at Rutgers, in New Jersey, speaking this week at a Roundtable on Somalia. Among the winners are Ethiopia - the Colossus to the North, Kenya to the southwest, and Djibouti, wedged between Ethiopia and Somalia, for their cooperation with the U.S. war on terror, he said. Losers are Egypt, Eritrea and the routed Islamic Courts.
